Dr Calvin Fones is Medical Director of PsyMed Consultants and Consultant Psychiatrist at Gleneagles Medical Centre and Mount Elizabeth Novena Specialist Centre. He is also Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Associate Professor, Centre for Biomedical Ethics, at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS).
He was previously Head of the Department of Psychological Medicine at NUS, and Chief of the psychiatric service at National University Hospital (NUH).
He received his basic medical and psychiatric training in Singapore, before pursuing Fellowships in the US, specializing in Clinical Psychopharmacology (Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston) and Clinical Sexuality (Center for Sexual & Marital Health, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland). He has trained at various Centers affiliated to Oxford, Yale and Kobe Universities.
Dr Fones has over 40 publications in various medical journals and books. He has won local and regional prizes/awards recognizing his research and has investigated the nature and treatment of a range of psychiatric conditions including anxiety disorders (panic disorder, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder), mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and schizophrenia.
Dr Fones continues to be active in teaching medical students and trainee psychiatrists, and is an examiner for qualifying psychiatrists in Singapore and the MRCPsych(UK). A popular and engaging speaker, he enjoys educating various audiences on different aspects of mental health.
Dr Fones aspires to apply the wealth of experience he has garnered as a teacher, researcher and clinician into his clinical practice. His mission is to translate advanced psychiatric knowledge and expertise into excellent and ethical care for all patients.
He has a special interest in the treatment of complex mood and anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, adult ADHD and sexual disorders.
Dr Fones has provided expert opinions for the Courts in Singapore, Brunei, UK and the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia/ United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials. He has appeared in court proceedings on behalf of defendants, plaintiffs and the prosecution on matters concerning mental capacity, psychiatric disability and responsibility. His opinions have been cited in several major judgements in the Singapore Courts.
